PINE BLUFF, Ark. – A frantic comeback attempt by the Prairie View A&M baseball team (4-12, 1-4 SWAC) fell short during a 6-5 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-10, 2-3 SWAC) Saturday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Down 3-0 after two innings, PVAMU scored its first run of the game in the third after Demarie' Smith drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Tyler Gordon single. However, the Panthers stranded two runners to end the inning.

UAPB went on to put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and from there the Panthers began to chip away at the Golden Lions' lead. After capitalizing on a pair of UAPB errors to push one across in the fifth inning, Prairie View A&M drew within three after Zach Trevino scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh. Trevino later scored pinch-runner Xavier Jefferson on a RBI groundout in the top of the eighth.

The Panthers managed a prime scoring chance in the top of the ninth. After Gordon drew a walk, Bradyen Johnson and Andrew Garcia with back-to-back two-out singles, the latter scoring Gordon to pull the Panthers within one.

PVAMU loaded the bases after Andrew Paige was hit by a pitch, but a Jefferson fly-out to left field ended the threat – and the game – for the Panthers.

Kellen Rogers had a pair of hits for the Panthers. Tyler Laux struck out seven in 7.0 frames of work during the game.

The Panthers will attempt to take the series victory over UAPB tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
