PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Prairie View A&M baseball team (3-14, 1-5 SWAC) was upended by Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-10, 3-3 SWAC) Sunday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at the Torii Hunter Complex.
The Panthers held UAPB in check for much of the day thanks to a solid outing by
Tyrone Tubbs. With Tubbs quieting the Golden Lions in check from the mound during his start, PVAMU wasted no time gaining the upper hand as
Brayden Johnson put the Panthers on the board with a two-run single that scored
Alex Martinez and
Tyler Gordon.
Prairie View A&M continued to build its lead in the third inning as
Kellen Rogers scored during a double play and Johnson slapped a RBI single to centerfield to score Gordon. After Rogers scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 Panthers in the top of the seventh, UAPB scratched one across for its first run of the game.
Andrew Garcia managed a RBI sacrifice fly to left that brought home
Xavier Jefferson to give PVAMU a 6-1 lead in the top of the eighth. However, the contest unraveled for the Panthers in the bottom half of the frame as UAPB managed three via a bases-loaded walk or hit by pitch to draw within one. From there, Humberto Maldonado hit a grand slam and Brandon Simon followed with a two-run home run to cap a nine-run inning for the Golden Lions.
The Panthers were unable to recover, as the side was retired in the ninth inning.
Gordon, Martinez, Jefferson and Johnson each had a pair of hits. Tubbs received a no-decision, allowing six hits and one run while striking out four in 6.0 innings of work.
