BOX SCORE BATON ROUGE, La. — The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 63-51 loss to Southern during Southwestern Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
"We got into a rhythm and we settled down," PVAMU Head Coach
Sandy Pugh said. "We had some turnovers. I thought that was a big thing. We had a couple miscues, but once we came into our rhythm, we figured out they couldn't guard us. We spotted them 20 points, which was bad, but we fought back into the game and we were right there at the end. These kids have a lot of character, and they kept fighting. I'm looking forward to the Tuesday match-up, I think it's going to be epic."
A hot start from freshman
Diana Rosenthal coupled with a three-pointer from freshman
Kennedy Paul put the Panthers (12-18, 9-9 SWAC) up 13-11 at the end of one, but the Panthers had a hard time getting shots to fall in the second quarter and were outscored 22-5 in the frame as Southern took a 33-18 lead into halftime.
Despite Campbell leading Prairie View A&M to a decent start out of the break, the Panthers struggled to gain footing until Paul led the team on a late 7-2 run. With PVAMU down 16 going into the final quarter, freshman
Kennedi Heard led the Panthers on a 10-2 run to pull them within single digits. Heard buried back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to 58-51 with 3:49 left, but turnovers hindered Prairie View's comeback effort down the stretch.
Rosenthal led the team with 14 points on 7-12 shooting and two rebounds. Heard posted nine points on 2-3 three point shooting, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Paul also contributed with seven points, two rebounds, one assist and one block.
