PRAIRIE VIEW – Incoming freshman bowler Ashlyn Okazaki is one of 10 individuals named to the 2019-20 Dexter High School All-American Team.
Okazaki earned a spot on the girls' team. Selected by Dexter Bowling along with input from the International Bowling Campus Youth Development staff, the team honors five boys and five girls. Each selection receives a $1,000 scholarship.
In order to merit consideration, honorees must have participated on a recognized interscholastic high school bowling team during the 2019-20 season and were required to maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). In addition to recognizing individuals who are accomplished in the classroom and in the field of competition, the distinction serves to spotlight impressive extracurricular and community involvement.
The Mililani, Hawaii native is set to join the Prairie View A&M bowling program this fall and plans to major in Architecture.
"It's very exciting to see one of your incoming recruits receive such a prestigious national award that reflects an individual's all around achievements," PVAMU Head Bowling Coach
Glenn White said. "During the process of recruiting Ashlyn, it was no question that she has an outstanding personality and a great desire to succeed at the highest level possible with everything that she endeavors."
While at 'Iolani School, Okazaki carried close to a 3.5 GPA and was a dual-sport athlete, playing softball along with her primary sport of bowling. An active participant in the performing arts, she held lead or supporting roles in several of 'Iolani's musical productions.
On the lanes, Okazaki anchored the 'Iolani team as they won back-to-back state championships in 2018 and 2019, the first two state titles in program history. The 2019 Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year, Okazaki had top-8 individual finishes at both state championship victories. Okazaki also led 'Iolani to consecutive ILH titles as well and was a first-team selection to the 2017-18 ILH All-Star Team. Okazaki also earned accolades on the Hawaii Bowlers Tour and the Leeward Youth Bowling League. She was named the 2018-19 Most Improved Senior for the Leeward league and led all girls players in Hawaii Bowlers Tour Scratch points in 2019.
"She certainly is an example of the type of student-athlete that I try to bring into the program and I'm sure that she will showcase her talents immensely in the architecture department here at Prairie View A&M," White said.
