ITTA BENA, Miss. – With a smothering defensive effort, the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team (4-4, 3-0 SWAC) cruised to a 77-31 victory over Mississippi Valley State (0-13, 0-5 SWAC) during Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday evening at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
How it Happened:
The Panthers controlled the contest from the opening tip, though the Delta Devils stayed close for much of the first half. After a jumper from Caleb Hunter cut the Panthers' lead to 24-21 with 3:36 remaining before the break, Jeremiah Gambrell took over for Prairie View A&M, scoring seven points as the defending conference champions closed the half on a 14-5 surge.
Up 38-26 at the break, the Panthers completely locked down the Delta Devils from there, limiting them to a paltry 2-of-15 shooting from the field. Meanwhile, the Prairie View A&M offense continued to work, scoring 30 unanswered points over much of the second half on their way to a 39-5 scoring advantage that sealed the deal.
The Panthers harassed Mississippi Valley State into 29 turnovers – 17 credited as steals – while dishing out 21 assists to just seven turnovers.
Key Stats:
Gambrell scored a game-high 19 points for the Panthers, who had four players in double-figures. Cam Mack scored 12 points and dished out nine assists. Jawaun Daniels and Lenell Henry scored 10 points each.
Terry Collins led the Delta Devils with 15 points. Hunter added 10 points.
The Panthers shot 50 percent from the field (32-of-64) and held the Delta Devils to a 36.4 percent shooting clip (12-of-33) during the win.
