PRAIRIE VIEW – An uneven offensive effort was costly for Prairie View A&M women's basketball (1-4, 0-2 SWAC) during a 55-48 loss to Alcorn State Monday evening at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
How it Happened:
A defensive struggle initially, the Panthers' offense came out of the gates sluggish before a
Jasmin Dixon lay-up sparked an 12-4 run that carried into the second quarter. With
Tiffany Tullis and
Kennedy Paul doing most of the heavy lifting on offense, Prairie View ultimately trimmed Alcorn State's double-digit deficit advantage to two. However, the Lady Braves managed an 11-2 spurt thanks to transition offense, carrying a 29-20 lead into the break.
In the third quarter,
Diana Rosenthal began to assert herself offensively, powering a 10-2 run that brought the Panthers within four. However, the surge was short-lived as the Alcorn duo of Kirdis Clark and Deja Mitchell scored a combined 18 points in the frame to keep the Panthers from inching closer. The Panthers were unable to get any offense going during the early portion of the final quarter, allowing Alcorn to push its lead to as many as 14. Prairie View managed to cut that lead in half late, but weren't able to overcome the Lady Braves in the final seconds.
Top Performances:
Tullis posted a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Paul stuffed the stat-sheet with eight points, eight boards, four blocks, three assists and a steal. Rosenthal scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds while dishing out three assists. Heard scored seven points and nabbed three boards.
Mitchell led Alcorn State with 19 points and seven rebounds. Clark added 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
