Consistency Leads Panthers to 48-21 Win Over Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Engage, retrieve, deliver was the key for the Prairie View A&M football team as the offense was consistent on Saturday, and the Panthers rattled off a 48-21 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over the Southern University Jaguars in A.W. Mumford Stadium.

This was the first win against Southern under head coach Eric Dooley's reign and the first at Southern since the 2015 season, which happened to be the Jaguars Homecoming game.

"This has been a long time coming and these guys have worked extremely hard," said Dooley.  "The only thing is that I knew it was going to be a challenge, because I know those guys (Southern) were going to come fight for 60 minutes.  I just got my team to understand the situation and prepared them to play on this type of stage, because I knew it was going to be a hostile environment."

How it Happened
For the fourth time this season the Panthers struck first, marching down the field 72 yards in four plays for a rushing touchdown by Jaden Stewart to take a 7-0 lead.  A quarter later the Jaguars replied with nine plays and a 54 yard scoring drive to even out the game at 7-7.

Prior to intermission Jawon Pass hit a wide open Donovan White for a 27 yard pass on nine plays and 69 yards, taking a 14-7 lead into the locker room.  After a Drake Cheatum interception (his third of the season) at the top of the third quarter Lyndemian Brooks rushed for 13 yards to advance the lead to 21-7 knocking off just 36 seconds on the clock.

Third quarter had a barrage of scoring as the Jaguars came back two minutes later and scored on a 5 plays 75 yard touchdown getting within reach of the Panthers with a 21-14 score.  Almost three minutes later Luis Reyes' 27-yard field goal pushed PV's lead to 24.  With less than a minute left Pass threaded a needle with a 56-yard pass to Evan Fairs to finish a 58-yard scoring drive and made it 31-14 before the fourth quarter.

As the fourth quarter came quickly so did the Jaguars on field play as they went four and out with the Panthers taking over at Southern's 46 yard line.  Stewart rushed for his second score of the game knocking just 44 seconds off the clock and taking a 38-14 lead with 13:07 left in the game.

Once again, PVAMU systematically moved 44 yards for another touchdown, with all four plays rushing plays as the final play was by Brooks on a three-yard touchdown run for a 45-14 lead.  The Panthers final scoring drive was after another Cheatum interception (his fourth of the season), with a 30-yard field goal by Reyes to make sure the Jaguars rally would be shorten with less than three minutes on the clock.

After a 65-yard return by Southern the Jaguars capitalized on the short yardage to the end zone after three plays and 17 yards placing their final points of the game on the board and the Panthers taking a 48-21 victory back to Texas.

The Panthers are now 6-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.
The Panthers finished with 504 yards of offense, getting 224 on the ground and 280 through the air.  Southern had 130 rushing yards and 120 through the air for 250 yards of offense.

Linebacker Tre'Shaud Smith led PV with 13 tackles (7 solo, 6 assisted) and one pass break-up.  Shahid Reece had a season high of seven tackles (6 solo, 1 assisted). Cheatum finished with three tackles, two interceptions for 30 yards and one pass break up.
