Panthers Fall Short in Comeback Efforts

LORMAN, Miss - All good things must come to an end. That mantra definitely applies to this game as the Panthers let one slip away against Alcorn as a 24-point outing in the second quarter was just enough to push the Braves over the edge in this contest, 31-29, PV's first loss to a conference opponent this season.

Coming into this game, Prairie View possessed a 7-1 overall record, it's best mark through eight games in the Eric Dooley era.

"It was a hard-fought game. We put ourselves in a hole [in the 2nd] and we had to fight back," said Dooley. "We didn't close today out like we should have, so now we're just going back to the drawing board and make sure we're prepared for the next game."

How it Happened:
The Panthers got off to a hot start, scoring on the very first drive of the game, marching 94 yards down the field, ending with a 44-yard catch and run into the endzone from Jawon Pass to Trejon Spiller to give PV the 6-0 lead. Both teams struggled to make things happen the rest of way in the quarter as 4 straight drives ended in punts.

The second quarter proved an inverse of the first for the Braves, putting up points on all on their drives off costly turnovers by the Panthers. Starting from their own 31, it took ASU less than 2 minutes to get on the board and take the lead 6-7 off a 57-yard pass. After a Luis Reyes field goal gave the lead back to PV Alcorn took 6:05 off the clock with a 13 play 55-yard drive that ended with a field goal, giving them back the lead 10-7 with under four minutes until halftime.

From there disaster struck for Panthers as a blocked punt and a fumble set up ASU nicely within PV's own 16-yard line and 18-yard line, both ending as touchdowns by the Braves, giving them the 24-9 lead heading into the locker room.

Third quarter saw Alcorn start off the ball and make the most of it with a 8-play 76-yard touchdown extending the Braves lead with a 31-9 score. Almost three minutes later, staring at a fourth and long from the ASU 30, Pass threaded a 30-yard pass to wide receiver Antonio Mullins to give PV some life in this contest, cutting down ASU's lead to two scores, 31-16.

Entering the fourth quarter, down by 15, the Panther offense came alive with a good rush and pass attack that was highlighted by a 20-yard catch to Spiller and 12-yard dart to Jaden Stewart, capped off with a 3-yard rushing TD for Ahmaud Antoine.

Once again, backed up deep in their own endzone at the 18-yard line, a 70-yard TD pass to Spiller put the Panthers down 29-31 following the unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt.

A late chance to take the lead came undone off a costly last-minute fumble that was recovered by the Braves at their own 18-yard line with just less than seconds remaining, ending with a final score and narrow loss to Alcorn, 29-31.

The Panthers are now 7-2 overall and drop to 6-1 in conference play.

The Panthers finished with 499 yards of total offense, getting 172 yards on the ground and 339 through the air. Alcorn rushed for 120 yards and threw for 263 yards, totaling 383 yards of offense.

Wide Receiver Trejon Spiller had a breakout performance, catching five passes for 153 yards and two TD's on the day. Running back Jaden Stewart led PV's backfield with 70 yards rushing on 16 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, Linebacker Tre'Shaud Smith led PV with 10 tackles (2 solo, 8 assisted). Defensive back Bryce Turner turned in a nice game with eight tackles (2 solo, 6 assisted), a tackle for loss, and one pass breakup.
