BOX SCORE Albuquerque, NM – A second-half rally by the Panthers late in the fourth frame wasn't enough as Prairie View A&M couldn't quite pull off the upset against New Mexico, 71-88.
How it Happened:
Things quickly got out of hand for the Panthers to begin the game as the Lobos doubled PVAMU's points in the opening quarter, 28-14.
The Prairie View A&M managed to slightly chip away at New Mexico's lead before an 11-2 run with 3:17 in the half extended their lead to 21 points, entering the half 50-29.
After the second quarter, the Panthers outscored New Mexico 24-18 in the third to get back into the contest, down by 10 with 4:33 in the game off a
Kennedy Paul steal which turned into a
Diana Rosenthal 3-pointer. The Lobos didn't allow Prairie View A&M to get any closer as they finished on a 10-3 run to give them the 88-71 win.
Prairie View A&M was led in scoring by Rosenthal who scored 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while providing a team-high five assists, four boards, and a block.
Gerlyn Smith was the next leading scorer for the Panthers with 16 while contributing a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Panthers had an interesting night shooting wise, going 26-84 (31.0 percent) from the field while hitting 9-of-20 (45.0 percent) from three-point land. PVAMU wasn't able to go to the charity stripe that often but made the most of it going 9-of-13 (76.9 percent).
Prairie View A&M travels to the Aloha State for the Hawaii Tournament this Friday in Manoa, Hawaii. The first game is set for November 19
th against Portland State with an 8:30 p.m. tip off and November 21
st against Portland with a 2:30 p.m. start.
