BATON ROUGE, La. – Behind a complete-game effort from Kyle Smith, the Prairie View A&M baseball team (5-14, 5-6 SWAC) took down Southern 5-1 during Southwestern Athletic Conference action at Lee-Hines Field Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened:
Prairie View A&M got on the board first as Xavier Jefferson singled and stole second before scoring on a RBI sac fly by Brayden Johnson.

Southern tied it after an errant Smith pitch struck a Jaguars batter with the bases loaded but from that point, the Panthers' senior ace settled down to largely quiet the Southern bats and Jaguar faithful. In the top of the third, senior Tyler Gordon blasted a lead-off homer to left to put the Panthers ahead for good – despite the team stranding a pair of runners. With Smith dealing, the Panthers continued to nickel and dime the Jaguars for runs.

In the fourth inning, Sebastian Coria drew a walk and moved to third after a double by Andrew Garcia. Gordon delivered a RBI single to bring Coria home, and Garcia later scored after taking advantage of a pickoff attempt to second from behind the plate. Demarie Smith capped the scoring with a RBI double in the top of the seventh to score Garcia, and Smith retired the last nine batters he faced to preserve the win.

Key Stats:
Smith got the win, going the distance and striking out eight while scattering seven hits. Gordon was 2-for-3.

Next Up:
The Panthers are back at it tomorrow, facing Southern in doubleheader action. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
