PRAIRIE VIEW – Unable to cash-in on several opportunities, the Prairie View A&M soccer team was upset by Southern 1-0 in the first round of the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.
How it Happened:
The Lady Panthers peppered Southern early and often with shots but weren't able to get any past netminder Chimoa Eriken. Prairie View A&M had a prime chance at the 33
rd minute, but a corner kick from
Lauren Hermosa to
Kalia Brown sailed wide.
From there, the Panthers continued to dominate possession in the first half. However, the half ended at a 0-0 tie.
In the second half, a Southern yellow card at the 54
th minute set up an
Andrea Nugent free kick, but the shot found the right crossbar. Not long after, Nugent had another look at it only for Eriken to make the stop.
Eventually, Southern capitalized on a costly collision that left PVAMU goalie
Quinn Josiah out of position to defend a clear shot from Jaguars midfielder Cordney Armstrong, giving the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. From that point, Southern managed to keep the Panthers off-balance, preventing any quality looks the rest of the way.
The loss concludes the Spring 2021 season for Prairie View A&M.
