PRAIRIE VIEW  – Junior defender Andrea Nugent was selected as the 2021 preseason Defensive Player of the year and a first team All Conference selection, as the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced the All-SWAC preseason soccer teams as voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

Prairie View A&M wrapped up its 2021 spring season with a 5-4-0 overall record, and 5-2-0 in conference playing all but one game against SWAC conference members.

In addition to A. Nugent four other Lady Panthers received all conference nods.  Senior midfielder JoJo Bernal, redshirt-sophomore defender D'Sanye Nugent, graduate-student forward Ashley Chala, and sophomore midfielder Lauren Hermosa, all earned SWAC honors respectively.

A. Nugent has been one of the best defenders for PVAMU, playing for the Lady Panthers team that allowed 1.024 while ranking in the conference's top 10 for shots (20).  She stands second on the team behind her sister with two goals, one assist, 20 shots taken with nine on goals, also scoring a game winning kick.

Because of the pandemic Bernal will return for a fifth season with the Lady Panthers.  The San Diego, Calif. native has earned All-SWAC honors in consecutive seasons, having been named to the second team in 2018.  In the spring she played in only eight of nine PVAMU games.  Playing for 615 minutes, having one goal, and taking 17 shots with six of them on goal, and one penalty kick attempt.  During the spring season she was named to the preseason first All-SWAC Team.  In 2019 Bernal earned All-SWAC First Team honors, playing a total of 1210 minutes, had four goals, one assist, took 46 shots, 22 on goal, and placed one game winning kick.

First team spring 2021 All SWAC selection D. Nugent played in seven out of the nine games during the spring of 2021.   Totaling 650 minutes of play, she led the team with two goals, one assist, and 10 shots with eight of them being on goal.

Chala is not stranger to the Panthers roster as she will complete her final chapter as a Lady Panther this season.  She played in seven out of the nine games this past season, playing for a total of 490 minutes. She had two goals, nine shots with five of them being on goal and one game winner.  In 2019 Chala had a breakout season as she landed a spot on the All-SWAC First Team, after booting in six goals, handling one assist, taking 23 shots, 12 which were on goal, and placing three game winning kicks.  She spent 957 minutes on the field.

As a freshman Hermosa was named second team All-SWAC playing in seven out of the nine games played during the spring season.  She clocked 278 minutes, had two goals, and took 14 shots with six of them being on goal.

The Lady Panthers are nine days away from their season opener when they travel to face the University of Louisiana Lafayette in Lafayette, La. on August 20.
