PRAIRIE VIEW – In what seemed to be an even game going into halftime, turned out to be a game where fouls made the difference in a 73-63 loss to the Golden Lions of Arkansas Pine Bluff Monday night.
PVAMU had an edge in a variety of areas, including more field goals, more personal fouls, but the Lady Lions had a 35-7 edge in free throw attempts on the way to a win at the William J. Nicks Building.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
PVAMU overcame a 10-point deficit midway through the second quarter on a 8-0 run followed shortly thereafter with a 11-2 stretch. A lay-up by
Diana Rosenthal with 2:24 left in the first half of play, followed by a 3-pointer by
Kennedi Heard lifted the Panthers pass UAPB to own their first lead of the contest (33-32). Two more layups by the Panthers prior to intermission gave them a 37-33 advantage, but a couple of PVAMU fouls sent the Lady Lions to the free stripe line to knot halftime at 37-37.
Arkansas Pine Bluff came out with smoking guns early in the third quarter increasing their lead by as many as 16 with 1:06 left in the quarter. PVAMU tried to chip away at the 11 point deficit going into the fourth. The closest that the Panthers would get was six points (66-57).
Arkansas Pine Bluff defense held PVAMU to no free throws through the fourth quarter, continuing to build their lead back to 10 with 42 seconds to go. Free throws made the difference in the game.
Rosenthal had a solid line on the box score, leading PVAMU with career high of 30 points along with two rebounds, two assists and five steals. She raised her career scoring total to 670 getting her closer to the 1,000 club with only 15 games being played.
Heard added 10 points, eight rebounds and four assist, while
Gerlyn Smith was two points away from her fifth double-double of the season contributing eight points and 10 rebounds.
As a team PVAMU shot 38.8 percent from the field (26-for-67) while hitting 71 percent (5-for-7) at the free throw line.
UAPB had a huge advantage in freebies, going to the line 35 times and hitting 24 for 68.6 percent. The Lady Lions shot 21-for-58 (36 percent) from the field. They also owned a 48-35 advantage in rebounds, including 20 offensive boards.
Prairie View was whistled for 25 fouls in the game, while the aggressive Lady Lions kept their fouls down to only 10 for the entire contest.
The women Panthers will return to action when they travel to Jackson, Miss to face the JSU Tigers on Saturday, January 15 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
