Panthers Fall at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss – In a battle to the end, Jackson State outran the Prairie View A&M Panthers in the second half to claim an 75-64 Southwestern Athletic Conference win over PVAMU Saturday night.

Prairie View A&M had two players in double figures on the scoreboard, topped by senior Jawaun Daniels and junior Jeremiah Gambrell with 16 points apiece.  Daniels also had a team high six rebounds, and one assist.

The difference in the contest can be traced to the shooting percentage for each team.  The Panther shot 70 percent in the first half but cooled off to 31.8 percent in the second for a 48.8 percent game total.  While the Tigers hit 44.4 percent in the first half and heated up to 55.5 percent in the second to end the contest at 50 percent.

The Panthers came out taking a 5-0 lead, but Jackson State got untracked with a quick jumper and draining a couple of three-point shots to take a 9-6 lead with under 15 minutes left in the first period.  Neither team could pull away as buckets fell from both ends of the court.

With less than four minutes left JSU took a six point lead, but that would be the largest deficit in the half.  Gambrell and Daniels put the Panthers back out front going into intermission with a 37-35 lead over Jackson State.

JSU eased out to a slim lead early in the second half as the Panthers lost the range, then pushed their margin to double figures, 59-49, when D'Rell Roberts laid in a layup with under eight minutes remaining.

From there, the Tigers were able to stay on top by double figures the rest of the way, going up by as many as 17 with 1:30 minutes left to play.  A couple of forced turnovers and free throws by the Panthers sliced the final difference to 11 points.

The Panthers will return to action on Monday, January 17 when they face the Alcorn State Braves in Lorman, Miss for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
