LORMAN, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team hands the Alcorn State Braves their first Southwestern Athletic Conference loss pulling out a heart-stopping 74-73 win at the Davey Whitney Complex.
Will Douglas led the Panthers with 21 points, seven rebounds, and one steal, while Jeremiah Gambrell ended the night with 16 points, two assists and one steal.
Jawaun Daniels was the third Panther in double-digits with 10 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
The first 20 minutes of play saw two ties at 8 and 16, but afterwards the Panthers advanced their lead by as many as six points with under four minutes left to play in the half. The Braves chipped away at PVAMU's lead, but that was the most they could do as PV went on a 5-0 run to go into the intermission with a 35-28 advantage.
A tie at 41-41 with 15:03 left in the game and another one at 54-54 with 8:16 began to become a hotly contested game, which could go anyway. The last two minutes seemed like the longest two minutes of any game as the last tie came at 73-73 with 27 seconds left in the contest.
A big free throw by Cox made the game a little scarier as on the ensuing play there was a foul committed by Douglas giving the Braves the opportunity to either win or take the two teams into overtime. But the prayer was answered as the Panthers walked away with the win after two missed free throws by the Braves player.
The Panthers are finished with road trips for the next two weeks as they will come home to the William J. Nick Building for three contests. On Saturday afternoon, PVAMU will host the Hornets of Alabama State, then will entertain the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Monday.
Saturday is slated for Alumni Night and are asking all former basketball players to attend the game.
