PRAIRIE VIEW – Junior
Diana Rosenthal had a season high of 29 points and five rebounds to lead Prairie View A&M to its second SWAC victory, with a 84-77 decision over Mississippi Valley Saturday afternoon in the William J. Nicks Building.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Panthers struck first to take the lead, but a back-and-forth play tied the game at 13 with under four minutes left in the quarter. Again PVAMU took charge to end the quarter with a seven point lead (22-15).
Turnovers plagued the Panthers in the second quarter, allowing Mississippi Valley to pull away for a short stint prior to the break. With a one point lead by the Devilettes big play maker Rosenthal shot a three-pointer to take the Panthers into the intermission with a 38-36 lead.
Prairie View A&M continued their scoring surge pushing their lead to seven at one point, but some key shots by MVSU brought them within in three. With under five minutes left in the quarter the deficit advanced to 10 points. But again Valley kept chipping away pulling themselves within two points (59-57).
Mississippi Valley found themselves taking a one point lead early in the fourth. A steal by
Brittany Garner turned into four fast break points to include an and-one by Rosenthal. The Panthers lead grew to 11 midway through the fourth quarter. In the final margin PVAMU took an 84-77 victory over the Devilettes.
PVAMU (5-9, 2-1 SWAC) got 17 points and 10 rebounds from
Gerlyn Smith, leading her to the fourth double-double of the season. Garner added a season high of 15 points and six rebounds, while
Kennedi Heard and
Emely Rosario each muscled their way to seven points apiece. Heard also grabbed eight rebounds.
Prairie View A&M's next action comes on Monday, January 10
th when the women will get a doubleheader underway hosting Arkansas Pine Bluff at 5:30 p.m.
