Second Half Surge Lifts Panthers Past the Red Wolves

Jonesboro, Ark. - The Prairie View A&M Panthers men's basketball team fought to the end with a hot finish to lift the Panthers to a thrilling 67-59 win over host team Arkansas State Friday evening at the First National Bank Arena. The Panthers stood out on the boards pulling down a whopping 45 rebounds to A-State's 24. PVAMU shot 41.0 percent from the floor and shot a low 17.6 percent from 3-point range. The Panthers shot a season best from the free strip line going 14-18 and 77.8 percent. Host team Arkansas State shot 40.8 percent from the field and was 7-26 from around the arc for 26.9 percent. The Red Wolves a three free throws from being perfect from the free line going 12-15 and 80.0 percent. The Panthers got off to a good start on the offense taking a quick 8-2 lead. The tables soon turned with the first tie coming at 19-19 with 9:02 left on the clock. Both teams went silent for more then two minutes of the game until Brian Myles laid the ball on the glass to make the score 22-21, before the Red Wolves took a 31-26 lead into intermission. Ball security and hot shooting down the stretch proved to be the biggest difference maker for the Panthers. After making some key free throws, PVAMU was paced by an incredible team performance advance the Panthers to a solid 51-47 lead that continued from the 6:54 mark. Graduate student Will Douglas led all players with 18 points, he corralled a season high of nine rebounds. Douglas was followed in scoring by senior Jeremiah Gambrell with 13 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Hegel Augustine was the third Panther in double-digits scoring 11 points, while adding six rebounds and one steal. The Panthers will continue on the road when they face Oklahoma State.
