JACKSON, Miss. – The baseball team of Prairie View A&M finished the Jackson State Tournament with a 1-2 overall record.
Day One:
JSU 3, PVAMU 2
- Benjamin Ybarra flied out in the top of the first inning to score Demarie' Smith after reaching base off of a walk.
- The Panthers kept their one run lead going into the bottom of the fifth, where Jackson State got on the board scoring all three of their runs.
- PVAMU added another run in the top of the eighth off of a Ybarra single and D. Smith score to make the contest 3-2 in favor of the Tigers.
or the day Ybarra went 1-for-3, while
Brayden Johnson was 2-for-4 to lead the Panthers offensively. Through eight innings
Roberto Maldonado earned the loss, after throwing 11 strikes, allowing only three walks, and three hits.
Day two:
Butler 10, PVAMU 1
- In a mid-day match up against Butler University a new opponent for the Panthers. The Bulldogs struck early in the contest as the visiting team got on the board in the top of the first with one run.
- Again Butler put another run on the board in the top of the fourth. Prairie View A&M answered adding one run on an Alex Martinez homer to left field for a RBI, this would be the only run that the Panthers earned.
- Butler added three runs in the seventh and five in the eighth for the 10-1 win.
Day three:
PVAMU 6, JSU 3
- Prairie View A&M got on the board first to take a 2-0 lead over host team Jackson State in the top of the third, with Jayden Williams reaching base on an error to score Mason Heiskell. Heiskell, who reached base earlier off a triple to right field. Ybarra scored Williams of a single for the two run inning.
- The Panthers added four more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Tre Turner singled to center field scoring both Jordon Ginn and Heiskell.
- Ginn reached base off of a walk, after Heiskell had reached base on a ground-rule double. Ybarra tripled down right field line scoring Turner and Williams, who reached base on a walk.
- JSU scored in the bottom of the fifth for their first run of the game. They also scored one run in the sixth and again in the eighth, but the Panthers earned the 6-3 win.
Ybarra led the Panthers going 2-for-4, with three RBI, while Heiskell went 2-for-4 on two runs.
Matthew Krall earned the win on the mound going 8.0 innings and Tyrone
Ty Tubbs received his first save of the season.
Through the three game Ybarra finished with five RBI going 4-for-10 at the plate to lead all Panthers, while Martinez was 3-for-11.
The Panthers will return to the diamond on Tuesday, when they make a visit to Texas A&M Corpus Christi for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Chapman Field, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
