GRAMBLING, LA – After a brief delay the Lady Panthers softball team were back in action, Sunday and Monday for a three game SWAC series against Grambling. Prairie View A&M fell 3-4 and 1-8 on Sunday, before picking up their first win of the season 6-1.
GAME ONE
GSU 4, PVAMU 3
- The scoring started in the bottom of the third, with Grambling scoring three runs, PVAMU getting one back in the top of the fourth, and again in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game in favor of the Lady Tigers.
- The Lady Panthers threaten to force an extra inning knotting the game a 3-3 in the top of the seventh. The Lady Tigers cut out any doubt of their lead with a final run in the bottom of the seventh to make the tally that would end the game 4-3.
- Audrey Garcia opened up the hitting for the Lady Panthers landing on base with a single to right field, before Biviana Figueroa singled to left field advancing Garcia. With two outs Jerrica Rojas singled to center field scoring Garcia for Prairie View A&M's first run.
- Aniya Spangler hit a homerun in the top of the fifth for the Lady Panthers second run. The scoring ended for PVAMU in the top of the seventh with a Makala Barnes double to right field scoring Natalie McLennan, who reached base as a pinch runner for Madison Parker who earlier subbed in for McLennan.
- Figueroa went 2-for-2 for the day.
- Cailin Massey (0-7) had the loss on the mound for the Lady Panthers in game one.
GAME TWO
GSU 8, PVAMU 1
- Grambling got on the board first in the second game on Sunday, scoring in the bottom of the second, the fourth and the sixth to take the 8-1 lead holding onto to their lead to close the game out in seven innings to take the win.
- On a Taliya Talley single to the shortstop the Lady Panthers got on the board with a single score by Brelyn Senegal, who was walked earlier to land on base.
- Mya Hall earned the loss for the Lady Panthers on the Mound in game two.
- Fiegueroa went 2-for-2, while Spangler was 2-for-3 on the day.
GAME THREE
- In the final game of the three game series the Lady Panthers got on the board first in the top of the first, Figueroa doubled to right field scoring Spangler, who reached base earlier on a single to right field.
- PVAMU then scored another in the top of the third again in the fourth adding four, before the Lady Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Prairie View A&M was able to hold onto the lead with a final 6-1 score.
- Garcia scored Spangler after she reached base on a single to left field for score two. The top of the fourth was the most impressive for the Lady Panthers as they scored four runs, beginning with a Talley double to center field. Jaylyn Davis reached base on an error advancing Talley to third. Senegal reached base on a fielder's choice scoring Talley for run three of the game.
- Both Mk Barnes and Maya Barnes crossed home plate, after Spangler singled to right field and advanced to second on the throw. With two outs Figueroa singled to right field to score Spangler, before out three of the inning.
- Both Spangler and Figueroa where 3-for-4 on the day. Spangler also had three runs.
- Freshman Cailin Massey earned her first win after pitching through 7.0 innings. Allowing five hits, one run and five strikeouts.
Up Next for the Lady Panthers is a three game home opener series with Alcorn State Friday, March 18 through Saturday, March 19. The first game is set to begin on Friday at 3 p.m. with SWAC doubleheader action beginning on Saturday at 12 p.m.
