Softball Takes Two of Three Game Series Against Alcorn

 PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M University softball team hosted the Lady Braves of Alcorn Friday and Saturday for their home opener picking up a 5-1 win on Friday and splitting Saturday's doubleheader action, winning the first game 10-5 win, and before falling 8-6 in game two.
 
Game 1
PVAMU 5, ALCORN 1
  • In the first game, Prairie View came out hot scoring two in the bottom of the second off of their two hits, with Audrey Garcia getting on base to start the bottom half of the inning on a single to left field.  Destinee Smith grounded out to second advancing Garcia.  Jaylyn Davis homered for a two run RBI.
  • Alcorn got on the board in the top of the fifth with one run.  Prairie View responded with three runs of their own.  Davis got on base with a single to the second, advancing to second when Natalie McLennan singled to left field.  Makala Barnes was walked loading the bases, before Biviana Figueroa singled to left field for her first RBI of the game advancing MK Barnes and McLennan, giving Davis the go to cross the plate for run three for the Lady Panthers.
  •  Garcia singled up the middle, advancing to second on the throw to score MK Barnes and McLennan to give the Lady Panthers the "W" for the first of three game series.
  • Davis led PVAMU's offense going 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.  Figueroa and Garcia both were 2-for-3.
  • Cailin Massey claimed the win on the mound for her second of the season.
 
Game 2
PVAMU 10, ALCORN 5
  • Prairie View took an early lead in the bottom of the second, as Smith hit her first homerun of the season to help the Lady Panthers take a 1-0  early lead.
  • Alcorn responded in the fourth with a single run to knot the game at 1-1.  In the bottom half of the fourth for PV, Smith opened the inning on a walk before stealing second base.  Davis was also walked placing a runner at first and second.  McLennan grounded out to the pitcher, advancing both runners to their perspective bases, before an Alcorn State pitching change occurred.  Madison Parker who stepped in for MK Barnes singled to center field scoring both Davis and Smith to give the Lady Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
  • Alcorn scored four runs of their own to take a 5-3 lead in the top half of the fifth.  PVAMU took the challenge and answered with seven runs in their half of play after Davis drove in Garcia who reached base earlier in the frame on a fielder's choice.  With the bases loaded Massey was walked to get on base and scored Taliya Talley, who also reached base after being walked.  McLennan singled scoring Smith and advancing each runner to continue having the bases loaded.
  • A grand slam by Parker pushed the score to 10-5, as neither team scored afterwards and the Lady Panthers took the game.
  • Mya Hall earned the win on the mound for PVAMU after pitching 4.2 innings, before Jerrica Rojas earned the save with a 2.1 no hitter pitched.
  • Parker had the hot bat as she was 2-for-2 and a career high six RBI.
 
Game 3
Alcorn 8, PVAMU 6
 
  • With a different beginning Alcorn would get on the board first in the top of one in game two, before PVAMU responded with a two run score.  Figueroa came across home plate first on a wild pitch for the Lady Panthers after reaching base with a single.  Garcia scored after Smith singled to shortstop to make it a 2-1 lead.
  • Alcorn tied the game with a run in the top of two (2-2).  The Lady Panthers would score two more in the bottom of the second to take the 4-2 lead.  On a single to center field by Figueroa, both McLennan and Mk Barnes scored. 
  • The Lady Braves would score once in the top of the third, before PV advanced their lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth.  Figueroa singled advancing to second on the throw, scoring both Mk Barnes and Talley.
  • Alcorn took the lead in the top half of the seventh with five runs as the Lady Panthers could not respond in the bottom of their half giving the Lady Braves the 8-6 win.
  • Massey earned the loss on the mound.  Figueroa led the offense going 3-for-4 and four RBI.  McLennan was 2-for-3

Prairie View will continue SWAC play when they face Arkansas Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff next weekend with the first pitch set for Friday, March 25.
