PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M baseball team opened the weekend with a 14-4 win in game one on Friday, a 10-9 victory in game two on Saturday, and dropping the final game of the series 16-4 on Sunday at Tankersley Field.
GAME ONE
PVAMU 14, TSU 4
- Texas Southern struck first in the top of the first. The Panthers responded with one run during the bottom of the first when Benjamin Ybarra drove in Damarie Smith with an RBI single to right field to knot the game at 1-1.
- PVAMU added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Smith opened with a triple to right field, as Tre Turner was walked to place runners on each corner. Both Smith and Turner scored on a Texas Southern error advancing their lead to 3-1.
- TSU added four runs in the top of the fifth to take a slight 4-3 lead. Alex Martinez led the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to left field later advancing to second after Brayden Johnson was walked. With runners at second and third Sebastian Coria drove in Martinez for a RBI single to center field. Paul Castro also hit a RBI single to score Johnson. With runners on first and second Zach Trevino doubled to left field for an RBI to take a 6-4 lead.
- The Panthers continued their runs after a TSU pitching change, Turner hit an RBI single, before Ybarra hit a 2 RBI single to center field for a 9-4 lead.
- PV went on to add five more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Coria opened with a single to right field, before Trevino single to right field to advance Coria. The Panthers eventually loaded the bases and Turner walked in Coria for a 10-4 lead. Ybarra hit a two RBI double to right field before another pitching change. That didn't make a difference for the Panthers as Turner scored on a wild pitch for a 13-4 lead.
- In the bottom of the eighth Dominic Cox opened the frame with a walk as Coria followed advancing Cox to second. Paul Castro loaded the bases with a single to left field for Trevino who drove in Cox for the Panthers to take the 14-4 run-rule win.
- Ybarra led the Panthers at the plate in game one, finishing 3-for-5 with five runs batted in. Trevino also collected three hits on the day, driving in two runs. Four other Panthers had multi-hit days as PVAMU compiled 19 total hits and 14 runs. Robert Maldonado pushed his record to 4-2 on the mound for the Panthers.
GAME TWO
PVAMU 10, TSU 9
- Turners RBI single edges the Panthers to 10-9 win in game two.
- The Panthers opened the bottom of the first frame with a single by Smith to right field. Martinez was walked to place runners on the pads. Johnson hit an RBI single to right field to take a 1-0 lead. They added a second run in the bottom of the third as Smith opened with another single and Turner was walked placing runners on first and second, prior to Martinez striking out swinging as the catcher missed the ball to make the play at first and in the process Smith scored for a 2-0 lead
- In the bottom of the fourth PVAMU added another run with Smith singling to the shortstop scoring Castro. In the top of the fifth TSU finally got on the board knotting the game at 3-3. In their half of the fifth the Panthers took the lead back adding another run for a 4-3 lead, as Johnson hit an RBI double to left field.
- Texas Southern battled back to tack on five runs in the top of the sixth. The Panthers rallied back placing two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Johnson hit another RBI double to center field. Johnson then scored on a pass ball for an 8-6 score in order of the Tigers.
- TSU added a final run in the top of the ninth, as the Panthers threatened in their half adding four runs and gathering the win. Castro doubled to center scoring Heiskell who pinch ran for Martinez. With runners in scoring position, Trevino hit a two RBI single to center field to knot the game at 9-9. Turner
- Johnson led the offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Derrick Curry earned the win on the mound recording a 3-2 record.
GAME THREE
TSU 16, PVAMU 4
- The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the first as Ybarra hit a RBI double to left center to begin the scoring. TSU took complete control early and carried the momentum into the each inning afterwards. They took a 6-1 lead in the top of the second, tacking on a run in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth after costly errors put the Panthers in a bad position.
- PVAMU tried to pull their offense together put was only able to add one run in the bottom of the fifth when Ybarra hit an RBI single to left center. TSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth (15-2) as they secured a final run in the top of the seventh to take a 16-2 lead. The Panthers added two in the bottom of the seventh when Ybarra hit a two RBI single to right field for a 16-4 loss to end the series.
Up next the Panthers will travel to Houston on Tuesday, April 12 for a single contest beginning at 3 p.m. at Husky Field.
