Softball Takes Weekend Series Over Jaguars

BATON ROUGE – The Prairie View A&M softball team picked up two wins (6-3, 13-9), falling 7-4 to Southern University in a three game series over the weekend.
 
GAME ONE - FRIDAY
PVAMU 6, SU 3
  • The first inning of the game on Friday the Lady Panthers struck first with one run, as Biviana Figueroa homered to center field for a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the third the Jaguars got on the board to take a 2-1 over PVAMU.  Prairie View tacked on two more runs taking a 3-2 lead.  Sophomore Maddison Parker hit a two RBI homerun to center field top of the fourth, holding their lead through three innings.
  • In the top of the seventh, PVAMU added three runs on a RBI single by Audrey Garcia advancing the Lady Panthers lead to 4-2.  Makala Barnes sported a two run homer to left center adding two more runs for a 6-2 lead.
  • The Jaguars would score once more in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as PVAMU took game one 6-3.
 
GAME TWO – SATURDAY
PVAMU 13, SU 9
  • The Lady Panthers got on the board first in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first.  With two outs Figueroa homered for the second time during the series to take a 1-0 lead.  Southern got on board in a big way in the bottom of the first scoring seven runs on five hits to go up 7-1.
  • PVAMU would close the gap with three runs scored in the top of the third, this time on an error by the left fielder allowing for three runs to come across home plate for a 7-4 inning.
  • In the Jaguars half of the third the Jaguars would add one more in the frame to widen the lead to 8-4.  In the top of the fourth PVAMU added four more runs to knot the game at 8-8.  On a RBI double from Natalie McLennan that scored Garcia.  Figueroa homered for a third time in the series scoring two more runs as Jaylyn Davis followed right behind her with her seventh home run of the season, for a 8-8 tie.
  • The Jags homered in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-8 lead.  The Lady Panthers responded adding five runs in the top of the seventh.  Karina Cisneros homered to left for a two RBI score and her second of the season.  Garcia hit a triple to right field, scoring right after on a wild pitch.  With two outs and the bases loaded Cailin Massey reached base on an error by the right field to advance to second as Figueroa and McLennan scored to take at 13-9 win.
 
GAME THREE
SU 7, PVAMU 4
  • PVAMU got on the board first in the final game of the series scoring three runs.  McLennan was hit by pitch and Mk. Barnes was walked, and a two RBI double from Figueroa brought McLennan and Mk. Barnes home, to make it a 2-0.  Cisneros reached based on an error by third base scoring Figueroa for run number three of the inning.
  • Southern got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring a run for a 3-1 score, adding six in the bottom of the third on eight hits.  PVAMU couldn't get their offense going like they wanted to, adding a single run in the top of the seventh off of a RBI double to centerfield by Garcia for a final 7-4 score in favor of the Jags.
 
Up next the Lady Panthers will return home as they play host to the Islanders of Corpus Christi for doubleheader action starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
