HOUSTON, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Baseball Team completed the 2022 regular season falling to Texas Southern 12-2 on Thursday, 14-8 on Friday and finishing the series with a 13-5 win on Saturday at MacGregor Park.
Game One:
TSU 12, PVAMU 2
- In Thursday's encounter, the TSU Tigers jumped out to a quick lead as they opened the game with a one-run first inning, before the Panthers got on the board taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
- In the fourth, Paul Castro launched a double to left field to get the scoring going for the Panthers to knot the game at 1-1. PVAMU scored a final run in the inning on a sac fly by Blake Redman to take a 2-1 lead over TSU.
- In the bottom of the fourth Texas Southern added two runs to take a 3-2 lead over PVAMU. The Tigers added six runs in the bottom of the eight to seal a 12-2 win over the Panthers.
- Roberto Maldonado took the loss as he gave up three runs in 4.0 innings pitched. Michael Dews gave up five additional runs in 3.0 innings. Castro posted a game-high two hits and one RBI, while Damarie Smith notched two hits as well. Five players had one hit apiece giving the team a nine hit tally. Redman was the only other player that drove in one run.
Game Two:
TSU 14, PVAMU 8
- The Prairie View A&M Panthers struck first placing a run in both the first and second frames. A TSU error by the second baseman allowed Kellen Rogers to score. The Panthers advanced their lead to 2-0 on a homer by Dominic Cox to left field.
- The Tigers struck in the bottom of the third behind six hits, four errors, three walks, three singles, a triple and two homeruns taking a 9-2 lead.
- The Panthers had to play catch up adding only two runs in the top of the fourth. Redman hit an RBI double to left field, before he scored on a passed ball.
- Texas Southern added two in the bottom of the fourth, another run in the bottom of fifth advancing the score to 12-4.
- PVAMU in turn, managed to put up a run in the sixth as Zach Trevino hit an RBI single. TSU added to their score advancing their score by nine for a 14-5 lead in the bottom of the six.
- The Panthers slowly clawed back into the game in the top of the seventh as Trevino hit a two RBI single to center field, before Smith was walked with the bases juiced for a RBI and a 14-8 contest allowing the TSU Tigers to roll to the win.
- Matthew Krall threw 2.2 innings, giving up eight runs, which three were earned taking the loss.
Game Three:
PVAMU 13, TSU 5
- Sebastian Coria got the scoring going in the top of the first as he hit a three RBI homer to center to put the Panthers up 3-0. Trevino kept the scoring going in the top of the second, belting a two RBI double to left center, before Smith hit an RBI single to right field taking a 6-0 crushing lead. The scoring didn't end there as PV added a final run as Brayden Johnson hit an RBI single to left field to make the lead 7-0.
- PVAMU carried their lead into the bottom of the third as TSU got on the board with one run. Texas Southern added a run on a homer to left field for their second run of the game.
- Trevino grounded out for an RBI to advance the Panthers score to 8-2. TSU had no answer, but PV was able to add an additional run the top of the sixth on a balk error by the pitcher scoring Johnson who landed on base being hit by pitch.
- Smith added another run in the top of the seventh as he hit a RBI solo-shot to center field. Texas Southern starting putting it together as they cut the score deficit in half making the score 10-5 in the bottom half of their inning.
- Coria hit a RBI single to center field adding a run in the top of the eighth, before Redman hit a RBI single to center field advancing the score 12-5.
- Benjamin Ybarra added the final run in the ninth as he hit a single RBI up the middle for a final 13-5 score and the PVAMU victory.
- Victor Mendoza (5-6) faced 28 batters striking out two, allowing four runs and six hits. Coria led the offense going 3-for-5 and four RBI's, while Smith went 4-for-5 with two RBI's.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, May 25 as the #3 seed in the west when they face #2 Florida A&M from the SWAC east at 9 a.m., in Birmingham, Ala. At Regions Field. The winner of that game will play on Thursday, May 26 at 3 p.m. against the winner of game three with Southern/Jackson.
