Augustin, Rasas combine to score 36, Prairie View A&M takes down Jackson State 59-50

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Hegel Augustin and Yahuza Rasas combined to score 36 points in the Prairie View A&M Panthers' 59-50 win over the Jackson State Tigers at home Saturday.

Augustin led the Panthers (7-11, 3-2) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Rasas tacked on a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds and Jeremiah Gambrell chipped in as well with six points from the bench.

Prairie View A&M grabbed 48 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Jackson State's 28, led by Rasas' 17 boards. The Panthers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 16 rebounds into 13 second chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Jackson State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Brian Myles' two steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 17-14 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run with 3:53 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Augustin, to increase its lead to 26-14, a score that would hold until halftime. Prairie View A&M got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 18 of its 26 total points.

The Tigers proceeded to tie things up at 48-48 before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Rasas' layup, to seize a 55-48 lead with 1:59 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 59-50 win. Prairie View A&M capitalized on eight Jackson State turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.
