Rosenthal's game-winner leads Prairie View A&M past Alcorn State 56-55

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --Diana Rosenthal hit a shot with just five seconds left on the clock to put the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team ahead for good in a 56-55 win against the Alcorn State Lady Braves at home Monday.

The Panthers (8-9, 5-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Kennedi Heard, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Desiree Lewis added 13 points, nine rebounds and two steals and Rosenthal helped out with 10 points.

Prairie View A&M collected 41 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Alcorn State's 35, led by Lewis' nine boards. The Panthers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 14 rebounds into 20 second chance points.

Prairie View A&M's defense held Alcorn State to only 13.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 35.7 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 14-7, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 2:42 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Heard, to tie the game at 14. Alcorn State then pulled ahead, sending the Panthers into the second quarter down 18-15.

Alcorn State kept adding to that lead, building a 22-15 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a three from Heard, to take a 25-22 lead. The Lady Braves cut into that lead, but the Panthers still enjoyed a 25-24 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 10 points.

Following intermission, Prairie View A&M continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 28-26 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Rosenthal, to expand its lead further to 36-26 with 6:04 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Braves had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 38-35 edge. Prairie View A&M took advantage of six Alcorn State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring four fast break points.
