MONTGOMERY, Ala. --Hegel Augustin notched a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, but the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team fell short to the Alabama State Hornets 56-55 on the road Saturday.
Augustin put together a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers (7-13, 3-4). Will Douglas also tacked on four points and two steals and Nikkei Rutty chipped in as well with six points and 10 rebounds.
Prairie View A&M out-rebounded Alabama State 48-43 in Saturday's game, paced by Rutty's 10 boards. The Panthers also pulled down 25 offensive rebounds and scored 21 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Alabama State to only 26.9 percent shooting from the field, including 24 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After playing to a 17-17 tie, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 7:08 left in the first half to take a 22-17 lead. Alabama State then responded to tie things up at 28-28 heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M got the job done in the paint in the first half, scoring 18 of its 28 points close to the basket.
Alabama State then snagged a 30-28 advantage before Prairie View A&M responded by going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Rutty's layup, to seize a 34-30 lead with 17:58 to go in the contest. The Hornets then fought back to even things up at 50-50 and send the game to overtime. Prairie View A&M made the most of nine offensive rebounds to tack on seven second chance points out of 22 total in the period.
Alabama State then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Prairie View A&M behind 56-55 at the final buzzer.
