PRAIRIE VIEW – A solid performance by both squads to resume Southwestern Athletic play as Prairie View A&M dropped a 66-62 decision to Southern University Wednesday night.
Southern scored first to open the game. The Panthers responded knotting the game at seven, before the Jags went on a 6-0 run advancing their lead to 11.
The Panthers began to try to make their way back, but Southern was out of reach with a 35-26 lead heading into the locker room.
PVAMU was paced by three players on the offensive end with six points apiece in the first half. As a team, PV took a 21-19 rebound advantage with
Nikkei Rutty grabbing seven to lead the Panthers in the opening 20 minutes.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half as they put together an 9-3 run to cut SU's lead to three (38-35) with still 15:57 left on the clock. The remainder of the frame was back-and-forth action with PVAMU down by only two with 1:14 remaining in the contest (63-61).
Southern was able to sustain their lead closing out the game 66-62.
Will Douglas led all scorers with 25 points, while Rutty added 12 points and finished with 11 total rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
PVAMU will hit the road to take on the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. Opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
