A Total Team Effort Lifts the Panthers By Mississippi Valley

ITTA BENA, Miss. – A total team effort lifted the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team to an impressive, 67-60 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils Saturday night.

The home team took an early 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest, before Will Douglas hit a jumper to put the Panthers on the board.  The Delta Devils pushed their lead to as many as seven, before PV began chipping away at the deficit.  PVAMU continued their push, taking their first lead at 13-12 with 10:49 left to go.  For a short period both teams went back-and-forth until PV took the lead for good closing out the final minutes at 31-28 going into the break.

Right out of halftime, PV advanced their lead to 10-points in the first six minutes of the second half (43-33).  Mississippi Valley cut the lead to single digits again with 8:45 to play.

Some miscues by the Panthers gave the Delta Devils the momentum that they needed cutting PV's lead to five (58-53) with 4:17 left in the game.  The two teams battled through the last four minutes of play.  Two final free throws by Jeremiah Gambrell provided the final score of 67-60.  Gambrell led all scorers with 22 points in the contest.

Seven of the nine Panthers who saw the court during the game scored at least two points and hauled in at least one rebound.  The group combined averaged 45.8 percent from the field.  PVAMU went 4-for-8 around the arc for 50 percent.

Douglas contributed 17 points and seven rebounds on 7-for-14 shooting.  Brian Myles added 13 points and seven rebounds as well.

The Panthers will return to action on Monday, Jan. 9 for a visit to Pine Bluff, Arkansas for a 7:30 p.m. tilt at the H.O Clemmons Arena.
