Prairie View A&M gets 28 bench points in 76-64 victory over Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, KY --The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team got a 28-point performance from the bench on the way to a 76-64 victory over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on the road Tuesday.

The Panthers (4-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Charles Lane Jr., who had 20 points, six rebounds and three steals. Nick Gazelas added 16 points and three steals and Charles Smith IV chipped in as well with 11 points.

The Prairie View A&M offense made hay from three-point land, making 10 threes on 24 attempts. Gazelas hit four treys for the Panthers in the contest.

The Prairie View A&M defense held Eastern Kentucky shooters to only 34.3 percent from the field, including 28 percent from three-point range.

The Panthers had two players who made an impressive impact to be named to the EKU Classic all-tournament team.  Charles Smith IV, who was named the tournament's MVP, and Charles Lane Jr.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 25-21 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 5:10 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Charles Smith Iv, to increase its lead to 31-21. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-28 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 36 points.

Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 52-40 with 12:53 to go in the contest. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 76-64 win. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 40 total points.
