Prairie View A&M gets 28 bench points in 89-66 victory over

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team got a 28-point performance from the bench on the way to an 89-66 victory against the at-home Monday.

The Panthers (1-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Javontae Hopkins, who had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Horton, Jr., Orlando added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals and Charles Smith IV chipped in as well with 14 points.

The Prairie View A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 16 turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hopkins' four steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-3, Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run with 15:24 left in the first half to take a 12-5 lead. The Panthers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 43-33 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 43 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 59-41 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Hopkins' layup, to grow the lead to 65-41 with 13:05 to go in the contest. They narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 89-66 win. Prairie View A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 46 points in the lane.
