GRAMBLING, LA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 27-point performance from the bench on the way to a 67-60 win over the Grambling Lady Tigers on the road Monday.
The Panthers (11-13, 8-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Kennedi Heard, who had 13 points and seven rebounds. Diana Rosenthal added 11 points and Kennedy Paul chipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds.
Prairie View A&M collected 40 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Grambling's 34, led by Heard's seven boards. The Panthers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into 14 second-chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Grambling to only 38.6 percent shooting from the field, including 11.1 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 9-8 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 4:49 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 14-8. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-14 advantage. Prairie View A&M capitalized on eight Grambling turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
Grambling fought back to tie the game at 25-25 before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run starting at the 2:38 mark in the second period to take a 30-25 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Prairie View A&M was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 12 points.
Prairie View A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a three from Heard, to expand its lead further to 50-38 with 22 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Prairie View A&M knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 20 total points.
Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Rosenthal's three, to grow the lead to 56-42 with 6:17 to go in the contest. The Lady Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-60 win.
