PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept UAPB to just 16.7 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-12 shooting performance on the way to a 78-68 win over the Lady Lions at home Saturday.
The Panthers (12-13, 9-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Diana Rosenthal, who had 14 points. Mikayla Hutchinson tacked on 12 points and TaMiracle Taylor chipped in as well with 12 points and two steals.
Prairie View A&M grabbed 43 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to UAPB's 37, led by Gerlyn Smith's 13 boards.
The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes, forcing 22 UAPB turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Kennedi Heard's three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 7-5 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run with 4:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Jayda Bowen, to increase its lead to 16-5. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-7 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
PVAMU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 1:57 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Smith, to increase its lead to 33-20. The Lady Lions cut into that lead, but the Panthers still enjoyed a 33-24 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Prairie View A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run to expand its lead further to 45-31 with 4:26 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-46 edge. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 23 third-quarter points.
Prairie View A&M started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Tamiracle Taylor's jumper, to grow the lead to 63-46 with 7:57 to go in the contest. The Lady Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-68 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of five UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of those takeaways.
