Women's Basketball wins turnover battle and takes down Mississippi Valley State

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team had 14 fewer turnovers than Mississippi Valley State in a 72-51 victory over the Delta Devilettes at home Monday.

The Panthers (13-13, 10-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Diana Rosenthal, who had 15 points, four assists, and two steals. Jayda Bowen added 14 points and four steals off the bench and Kennedi Heard added eight points and three steals.

Prairie View A&M grabbed 37 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Mississippi Valley State's 32, led by six boards from Gerlyn Smith. The Panthers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into five second-chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 29 Mississippi Valley State turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the other end of the floor. Bowen's four steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 14-7, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 1:55 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 14, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.

Prairie View A&M turned the first-quarter tie into a 21-19 lead before going on a 13-0 run to increase its lead to 34-19. The Delta Devilettes cut into that lead, but the Panthers still enjoyed a 36-24 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Prairie View A&M continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 46-33 before going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bowen, to expand its lead further to 57-33 with 3:48 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Delta Devilettes had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-38 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kennedy Paul's layup, to grow the lead to 67-41 with 6:02 to go in the contest. The Delta Devilettes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-51 win. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.
