Prairie View A&M gets 46 bench points in 98-88 victory against Alcorn State

LORMAN, MS --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 46-point showing from the bench on the way to a 98-88 win over the Alcorn State Lady Braves on the road Saturday.

The Panthers (14-13, 11-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Diana Rosenthal, who had 19 points and six assists. Kennedi Heard added 13 points and two steals off of the bench and Kennedy Paul chipped in as well with 11 points.

Prairie View A&M shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 20 assists on 31 made field goals. Rosenthal's six assists paced the Lady Panthers.

Prairie View A&M forced 18 Alcorn State turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Desiree Lewis led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 3-1 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 9:02 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Destiny Jenkins, to increase its lead to 8-1. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 28-22 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 28 points.

Prairie View A&M built that first-quarter lead to 39-29 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 4:37 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jessica Soders, to increase its lead to 47-29. The Panthers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 57-37 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 29 points.

After intermission, Prairie View A&M held on to its advantage and owned a 70-60 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 73-62 before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 80-62 with 8:08 to go in the contest. The Lady Braves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 98-88 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 28 points in the paint.
