LORMAN, Miss. -- Four Prairie View A&M players notched at least two hits to help lead the Panthers over the Alcorn State Braves 10-4 Saturday.
Junior Michael Dews (2-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (2-16, 1-0). The right-hander went eight innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on 10 hits, allowing no walks and striking out six. Junior Tyrone Ty also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.
Sophomore Garrison Weiss led the hit barrage for the Panthers, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a triple and two RBI. Junior Andre Jackson provided a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Prairie View A&M scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from Weiss.
The Braves then tied the ballgame at three before the Panthers came back to reclaim their advantage in the sixth inning. Prairie View A&M scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run triple from Jackson, which brought the score to 6-3 in favor of the Panthers.
Alcorn State narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 6-4 before the Panthers stretched the advantage to 10-4 in the ninth inning. The Panther's bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run error off the bat of sophomore Alex Diaz and a two-run double from senior Sebastian Coria. The score remained 10-4 for the rest of the game, as Prairie View A&M coasted to the win.
