Prairie View A&M rallies from late tie for 6-5 victory over Alcorn State in 7

GAME 1 | Prairie View A&M 6, Alcorn State 5
LORMAN, Miss. --The Prairie View A&M Panthers broke through after a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning to take down the Alcorn State Braves 6-5 Sunday.

Junior Victor Mendoza (1-0) got the win for Prairie View A&M (4-16, ). The right-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Junior Tyrone Ty also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

Sophomore Blake Redman led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple and an RBI. Senior Sebastian Coria put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Garrison Weiss also helped out, going 2-for-3 for Prairie View A&M with a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Coria drove in two runs for Prairie View A&M with a single, that scored sophomore Jayden Williams and Weiss.

The Braves then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-2 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the fourth. Prairie View A&M put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Redman, which tightened the Braves lead to 5-4.

Prairie View A&M held the Braves off the scoreboard before rallying to tie it up at five in the fifth. The Panthers recorded a run on junior Paul Castro's one-out RBI double.

The game stayed tied until the very next inning when Prairie View A&M got rolling again on offense. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Michael Burroughs, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 6-5. The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers held on for the win.
