PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team took control after a 44-44 tie to end the third quarter and defeated the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 65-57 at home Saturday.
The Lady Panthers (15-14, 12-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Diana Rosenthal, who had 23 points and three steals. Kennedy Paul tacked on 15 points and six rebounds and TaMiracle Taylor added five points and six rebounds.
Prairie View A&M grabbed 37 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Texas Southern's 30, led by Paul's six boards.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Texas Southern to only 13.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 39 percent from the field. The Lady Panthers also limited Micah Gray to 2-of-10 shooting from downtown in the game. The Lady Tigers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with four offensive rebounds and managed five second-chance points while Prairie View A&M cleared 29 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M started out the scoring by going on a 9-0 run, culminating in a three from Paul, to take an early lead with 7:47 left in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.
Texas Southern rallied to take a 17-15 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run starting at the 8:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jaliyah Harper, to take a 21-17 lead. The Lady Tigers cut into that lead, but the Lady Panthers still enjoyed a 28-25 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
The Lady Panthers had lost that lead by the end of the third quarter and entered the fourth frame with the score tied 44-44. Prairie View A&M scored four fast-break points in the quarter.
Prairie View A&M kept it close before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Mikayla Hutchinson's three, to seize a 53-46 lead with 8:14 to go in the contest. The Lady Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 65-57 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of five Texas Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
