HOUSTON, Texas --Junior Tyran Norris and senior Alex Martinez each racked up three hits to help lead the Prairie View A&M Panthers past the Texas Southern Tigers 10-5 on Friday.
Junior Victor Mendoza (2-2) got the win for Prairie View A&M (9-18, 7-1). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing two walks, and striking out four.
In addition to his three hits, Martinez had an RBI to lead the Panthers. Norris added a walk and two RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Sophomore Garrison Weiss also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk, and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Weiss came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board.
The Tigers then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the fifth. Prairie View A&M managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the Panther's lead to 3-2.
Prairie View A&M kept Texas Southern without a run before building their lead to 7-2 the following inning. The Panthers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of sophomore Jayden Williams.
The Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 7-5 until Prairie View A&M added some insurance in the ninth. The three-run frame for the Panthers was punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of Norris. bringing the score to 10-5 in favor of Prairie View A&M. The score remained 10-5 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.
