Prairie View A&M rallies from late deficit, to take game one 8-7; Panthers split the day with 4-2 loss to Texas Southern

GAME 1 | Prairie View A&M 8, Texas Southern 7
BEAUMONT, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers fought back from down 5-3 in the seventh inning to beat the Texas Southern Tigers 8-7 Friday.

Junior Michael Dews (5-5) started on the mound and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (18-30, ). The right-hander went eight innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on 12 hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Junior Devin Aguado also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Panthers were paced by freshman Ahmar Donatto, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBI. Freshman Michael Burroughs furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Junior Derrek Lathon also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers were trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Prairie View A&M scored twice in the inning on run-scoring doubles from senior Alex Martinez and Lathon.

The Panthers kept the deficit at 4-2 before closing the gap further in the fifth. Prairie View A&M pushed across a run on Donatto's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Tigers.

Texas Southern expanded their lead to 5-3 before the Prairie View A&M offense got back to work, overtaking the Tigers to grab an 8-5 advantage in the eighth. The Panthers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Burroughs. Texas Southern put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Prairie View A&M still held on for the 8-7 win.

BEAUMONT, Texas --Junior Victor Mendoza put together a quality outing on the bump on Friday, but the Prairie View A&M Panthers fell 4-2 to the Texas Southern Tigers.

The solid outing from Mendoza was not enough for Prairie View A&M (18-31, ). The right-hander went eight innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing five walks and striking out four.

Senior Zachary Trevino led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 1-for-1 in the ballgame with three walks. Sophomore Garrison Weiss furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Jayden Williams also contributed, going 1-for-3 for Prairie View A&M with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Trevino came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board.

The Panthers kept the deficit at 2-1 before tying the score in the seventh. Junior Paul Castro came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M, which brought the score level at 2-2. Texas Southern then scored two times over the remaining two innings to break the tie and grab the 4-2 win.
