PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Charles Smith IV and Nick Gazelas combined to score 44 points in the Prairie View A&M Panthers' 71-60 victory against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at home Saturday.
The Panthers (6-10, 1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Smith IV, who had 28 points. Gazelas tacked on 16 points and Brian Myles chipped in as well with a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Prairie View A&M offense was impressive from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 19 attempts. Gazelas hit four treys for the Panthers in the contest.
Prairie View A&M forced 22 Mississippi Valley State turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Saturday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 27 points on the offensive end of the floor. Orlando Horton, Jr. led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-1, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 13:45 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Charles Lane, Jr. to take a 7-5 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 30-25.
After intermission, Prairie View A&M managed to gain control and had a 59-53 lead before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 67-53 with 3:28 to go in the contest. The Delta Devils narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 71-60 win. Prairie View A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 32 of its 46 points in the lane.
