Hopkins' dagger shot leads Prairie View A&M over Jackson State 71-62

JACKSON, MS --Javontae Hopkins hit a dagger shot with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter to put Prairie View A&M ahead 69-61, and the Panthers secured a 71-62 victory over the Jackson State Tigers on the road Saturday.

The Panthers (7-10, 2-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Hopkins, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Charles Smith, IV tacked on 17 points and three steals and Brian Myles chipped in as well with a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Hopkins pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead the Prairie View A&M offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 15 second-chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense held Jackson State shooters to just 38.5 percent from the field, including 23.5 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After falling behind 12-7, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 14:01 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Myles, to take a 13-12 lead. The Panthers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 31-26 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 31 points close to the basket.

Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jr. Lane's three, to grow the lead to 59-52 with 7:00 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 71-62 win. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 40 total points.
