PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- In a powerful showing, the Prairie View A&M Panthers launched their regular season with a decisive 111-90 victory over the Biblical Studies (TX) Ambassadors in their opener on Monday night with big points by Orlando Horton, Jr., Nick Anderson, and Tanahj Pettway The match took place at the William J. Nicks Building in Prairie View, TX, marking a strong start to the Panthers' season.
Horton led the Panthers (1-0) with 28 points, six assists and two steals. while Anderson tacked on 27 points and Pettway chipped in as well with 24 points and three steals. Marcel Bryant pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Prairie View A&M offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 18 second-chance points.
The Panthers established a solid lead by halftime, ahead by ten points at 47-37. This early advantage set the stage for a high-scoring second half. Pettway not only excelled in scoring but also contributed with steals and assists, enhancing the team's overall performance.
Further contributions came from other players like Bryant, Marcel, who had a near double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Jordan Tillman with contributions across the board including points, assists, and rebounds. After jumping out to a 12-11 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 11:56 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jordan Tillmon, to increase its lead to 19-11. The Panthers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 47-37 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 47 points close to the basket.
Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Solomon Oraegbu's layup, to grow the lead to 87-75 with 8:14 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 111-90 win. Prairie View A&M got out on the break in the period, scoring 15 fast break points.
