Lady Panthers Secure a Convincing 3-0 Victory Over Alcorn in Volleyball SWAC Play

LORMAN, MS --  In a stunning display of dominance, the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers clinched a decisive victory against the Alcorn Lady Braves with a final score of 3-0 at the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex in Lorman, MS on Monday night. This league game showcased the Lady Panthers' superior strategy and execution, enhancing their record in the SWAC to 10-3 while holding an overall record of 13-15 for the season.

The Lady Panthers set the tone early, winning the first set by a substantial margin of 25-12. They maintained their momentum through the second and third sets, concluding at 25-10, demonstrating their consistency and determination. Key player Kylee Owens led the charge with an impressive 17 kills, contributing significantly to the team's success. In addition to Owens, Jade Coates added six kills and topped the team's blocking efforts with three blocks, while Bailee Hewitt supported the squad with four kills.

Defensive plays were equally important in this comprehensive win. Leila Smalls led with 14 digs, and Kylee Owens contributed nine, showcasing their defensive skills. The match also featured strong serving, with Owens delivering seven aces, followed by Smalls with two. The teamwork was further highlighted in the assists department, with MaKinzie Taplin and Tayler Ruffin each providing 18 assists, helping set up key plays throughout the contest.

According to post-match reflections, the coaches and players were especially proud of the team's blocking performance and the aggressive serving that kept Alcorn off balance. Looking ahead, the Panthers are scheduled to face Texas Southern on November 10, 2024, at the HP&R Recreation Arena in Houston, Texas. The team remains focused on maintaining their form as they progress through the league, hoping to continue their success in the forthcoming contests.

Kylee Owens finished with 17 kills on the day to lead the Lady Panthers attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .593.  Owens also pitched in with seven in the contest. got 14 digs from Leila Smalls to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Panthers won the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to secure the first set 25-12. Prairie View A&M opened up its biggest lead, 13 points, to close out the set. Prairie View A&M also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Prairie View A&M put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-10 victory in set number two. The Lady Panthers led from the first point on in the set to earn the victory. Prairie View A&M opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 15 points, to finish off the set. The Prairie View A&M offense also got a boost from six aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Prairie View A&M closed the match in a 3-0 sweep after grabbing set three. The Lady Panthers scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-10 victory. Prairie View A&M opened up as much as a 15-point lead at 24-9 before closing out the set.
