PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- Charles Smith IV, Brian Myles, and Javontae Hopkins combined to score 54 of Prairie View A&M's 71 total points, but the Panthers fell to the Southern Jaguars 77-71 at home Saturday.
Smith led the Panthers (10-15, 5-7) with 22 points and four assists. Myles tacked on 18 points and Hopkins chipped in as well with 14 points and four assists.
Prairie View A&M took advantage of great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 15 assists on 22 made field goals. Hopkins' four assists led the distribution list for the Panthers.
The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 22 Southern turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Andre Nunley led the way individually for the Panthers with two steals.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 43-35 heading into halftime.
Southern kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 65-47 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 12-0 run to shrink the deficit to 65-59 with 6:56 to go in the contest. The Panthers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 77-71. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 10 Southern turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
