PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Javontae Hopkins scored 27 points and Brian Myles added 27, but the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team fell to the Grambling Tigers 83-74 at home Monday.
Hopkins and Myles' stellar scoring performances led the Panthers (10-16, 5-8) in the contest. Hopkins tacked on four assists and Myles added 10 rebounds and two steals. Charles Smith IV also helped out with seven points and five assists.
Prairie View A&M took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Monday's game, piling up 15 assists on 27 made field goals. Smith IV's five assists were the most for the Panthers.
Prairie View A&M forced 14 Grambling turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Monday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Myles' two steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.
How It Happened
After falling behind 33-20, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 2:30 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jr. Lane, to narrow its deficit to 33-27. The Panthers continued to close the gap, cutting the Grambling lead to 37-33 by the end of the first half.
Grambling kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 51-45 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Hopkins' jumper, to shrink the deficit to 51-50 with 14:06 to go in the contest. Grambling responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 83-74. Prairie View A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 41 points in the lane.
