PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Charles Smith IV, Javontae Hopkins, and Brian Myles combined to score 52 of Prairie View A&M's 69 total points, but the Panthers fell to the Texas Southern Tigers 80-69 at home Saturday.
Smith IV led the Panthers (8-13, 3-5) with 23 points. Hopkins added 16 points and Myles helped out with 13 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
Prairie View A&M utilized great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 15 assists on 21 made field goals. Individually, Kevin McGaskey dished out the most for the Panthers with five assists and Andre Nunley also contributed with three assists of his own.
The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Nunley led the way individually for the Panthers with four steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 35-20, Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run with 7:05 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Myles, to narrow its deficit to 35-28. The Panthers continued to close the gap, cutting the Texas Southern lead to 41-37 by the end of the first half.
Texas Southern kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 72-54 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Myles' layup, to shrink the deficit to 72-63 with 5:02 to go in the contest. Texas Southern responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 80-69. Prairie View A&M capitalized on five Texas Southern turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
