PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- Charles Lane, Jr. knocked down a shot with just eight seconds remaining on the clock to put the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team ahead for good in a 75-74 victory against the UAPB Golden Lions at home Monday.
The Panthers (9-13, 4-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Charles Smith IV, who had 23 points and three steals. Javontae Hopkins tacked on 21 points and Brian Myles chipped in as well with a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Prairie View A&M shared the ball well in Monday's game, racking up 17 assists on 27 made field goals. Individually, Kevin McGaskey dished out the most for the Panthers with eight assists.
Prairie View A&M forced 18 UAPB turnovers while committing only seven themselves in Monday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Smith IV's three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 20-15 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 9:33 left in the first half to increase its lead to 27-15. The Panthers then lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 37-29 advantage. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 11 UAPB turnovers in the period, turning them into 11 points on the other end of the floor.
Prairie View A&M started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Lane's jumper, to grow the lead to 43-29 with 18:05 to go in the contest. The Golden Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still held on for the 75-74 win. Prairie View A&M made the most of seven offensive rebounds to tack on seven second-chance points out of 38 total in the period.
