BATON ROUGE, La., --The Prairie View A&M Panthers put together a furious comeback, scoring three runs over the eighth and ninth innings, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 11-10 to the Southern Jaguars Saturday.
Senior Victor Mendoza (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Prairie View A&M (13-17, 4-4 SWAC). Sophomore Tyson Carlton was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going five shutout innings while allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out four.
Offensively, the Panthers were paced by senior Marshal Jonas, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Junior Garrison Weiss put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI. Freshman Micheal Smith also contributed for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers were trailing 7-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Prairie View A&M plated two runs when Jonas left the yard with sophomore Micheal Burroughs aboard.
The Panthers kept the Jaguars off the board before tying it up in the seventh. The Prairie View A&M offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Weiss, which brought the score level to 7-7.
That 7-7 tie turned into an 8-7 Prairie View A&M lead in the eighth.
Prairie View A&M lost the lead they built in the eighth but got back on the scoreboard in the ninth trailing 9-8. The Panthers scored twice, with one run coming across on junior M. Heiskell's 2-out single, bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of Prairie View A&M. The Panthers were unable to hold the lead, as Southern scored two times in the bottom half of the ninth to grab the 11-10 win.
