LAS CRUCES, N.M. --The Prairie View A&M Panthers struggled on Friday, falling to the New Mexico State Aggies by a final score of 22-4.
Junior Michael Dews (1-1) got the ball to start for Prairie View A&M (6-8) and took the loss.
Senior Marshal Jonas led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and two RBI. Senior Derrek Lathon compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Freshman Michael Smith also helped out, going 1-for-2 for Prairie View A&M with two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 6-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Smith came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board.
The Aggies expanded their lead to 9-1 before the Panthers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. Lathon came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M, which brought the score to 9-2 in favor of the Aggies.
New Mexico State expanded their lead to 22-2 before the Prairie View A&M offense got going, reducing that lead to 22-4 in the seventh. The Panthers picked up two runs in the frame, the key hit being an RBI double from Jonas. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.
