GAME 2 | Prairie View A&M 11, Southern 6
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --Prairie View A&M got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Panthers put 11 runs on the board and take down the Southern Jaguars 11-6 Saturday.
Junior Halley Elizarraras (1-3) started in the circle and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (21-16, 16-1). The right-hander went three innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Senior Jerrica Rojas also made an impact in the circle for the Panthers, throwing four shutout innings while allowing no hits.
At the plate, the Panthers were paced by sophomore Mia Nunez, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk, and two RBI. Senior Biviana Figueroa furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Destinee Smith also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Prairie View A&M's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Smith.
The Jaguars then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 6-5 until the Panthers expanded their advantage in the second. Prairie View A&M picked up a run on Nunez's leadoff home run off of freshman K. Williams, which brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the Panthers.
Southern narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 7-6 before the Panthers stretched the advantage to 8-6 in the third inning. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Figueroa.
Prairie View A&M held the Jaguars scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. Freshman Aryana Cruz and junior Aerin Talley came in to score the two Panthers runs in the frame, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 10-6.
The Panthers held Southern off the scoreboard before building on their lead to 11-6 the following inning. Prairie View A&M scored a run when senior Karina Cisneros drew a walk from freshman SLiebenthal that scored freshman Lainey Niederhofer. The score remained 11-6 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.
